Relocating? Don’t Miss This Must-Follow Moving Checklist

Have you recently taken possession of your new home and started planning the big move? If yes, you’re probably wondering how to begin the transition smoothly. Relocating can become stressful if not organised properly, often resulting in last-minute chaos. To help you avoid that, Infinity Housing has put together a comprehensive checklist that will make your moving experience easier and more enjoyable. After all the effort you’ve invested, the long-awaited day is almost here, and your excitement must be at its peak. To ensure everything goes according to plan, here’s a practical guide on what to do before shifting to your new home.

Start sorting

Walk through every room and identify what you want to take along and what needs to be discarded. Being selective will help you avoid clutter in your new home. Let go of items—furniture, appliances or décor—that haven’t been used in ages.

Research moving companies

Hiring a reliable moving service can make all the difference. Look for reputable movers who can help pack, transport and even store your belongings if needed. Go through reviews on community platforms, and while staying mindful of your budget, don’t compromise on quality. Moving your belongings safely is one of the most important parts of the process.

Collect packing material

Start gathering packing materials well before your moving date. Whether you buy or collect boxes, cartons, bubble wrap and protective sheets, make sure you have enough. Using labelled cartons is highly recommended. Keep markers handy, and consider using your suitcases for additional packing space.

Use up perishable items

Consume products with a short shelf life—especially food items, toiletries, cleaning supplies or anything that may expire soon. This will reduce waste and lighten the load.

Take measurements

Measure every room in your new home and compare the dimensions with your existing furniture. This will help you decide what fits and what won’t. Also check if your larger furniture pieces can pass through the entrances and hallways. If not, you may need alternative moving arrangements such as lifting through balconies.

Start packing early

Packing early saves time and stress. Wrap each item securely using bubble wrap, paper, or cloth layers. Place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and lighter ones on top. Try to maximize space in each box to reduce the total number. Sort your belongings into categories—clothing, kitchenware, appliances, valuables, and miscellaneous—and label each box clearly to simplify unpacking.

Update your address

Once your packing is done and the moving date is near, start informing relevant people and organizations about your new address. You’ll also need to update official documents like your passport, driving license and other IDs. Those who need your updated address may include:

  • Friends and family
  • Employer
  • School or educational institution
  • Doctor or healthcare provider
  • Bank or financial institution
  • Utility providers (gas, water, electricity)
  • Telecom and mobile service provider
  • Satellite/cable TV operator

Depending on your personal needs, there may be additional updates required. When in doubt, consider consulting professional packers and movers to make informed decisions.
